A Birthday Note for the Birthday Girl

Dear Madelyn,
Happy 1 week birthday to you, sweet girl! I am sitting by your side at this very moment. Your daddy is in the chair next to us, resting his eyes. He has kept them on you nonstop...you are his favorite thing to look at.

This week, the first week of your life, has been one filled with every emotion that I have ever experienced in my life. I will never forget hearing your first cries. Your daddy and I joked that you had some pipes on you because they were the loudest little newborn cries I have ever heard. Then, the moment I waited 9 months for...the doctors held you up over the curtain in the operating room and I laid eyes on you for the very first time. You looked so beautiful. Chunky cheeks. Dark hair. The cutest button nose I have ever seen. Your daddy rushed over to get video and pictures of all you firsts...being washed off, weighed and measured. They called out, "Six pounds, eleven ounces! 19 inches long". Your daddy called it out again to make sure I heard them! It seemed like time was standing still. Then the nurse brought you over to me. She said that you were having a little trouble breathing so they were going to take you back to the special care nursery. They told me that I could go see you when I was able to move my legs and that it would probably be around 7 or 8pm. Who were they kidding?? It was obvious that they don't know your mommy. I went to see you just after 11am!! By mid afternoon I was walking myself down to see you. One of the nurses even stopped me to ask what I needed or where I was going. She didn't realize I was a patient because I was walking so well. The truth is...that is how bad I wanted to see your sweet face, hold your little hand, and whisper in your ear. You are loved. The days and nights that followed were filled with tears of joy and sadness, excitement and worry, prayers, picture taking and doting over you. Your breathing would get better. Then it would get worse. There were moments that your daddy and I could do nothing but sit in silence as we watched your little body struggle with every breath you took. All of your family anxiously waited to see you for the first time. They peaked through a tiny nursery window crack to get even the smallest glimpse of you. So many sweet friends sent you flowers, brought you gifts, and prayed for you. And then there were the complete strangers that did the same. You are loved.

Most of the days have started to blend together. There is one that has not. The day that you stopped breathing. The day that our faith was tested, your lungs tired out and you were transferred to the NICU at Trinity Mother Frances. I remember rushing to your nursery...and seeing you stop breathing...again. My legs gave out from under me. The next hour was filled with working out the details of getting you the care you needed. Then the team arrived to transfer you. They loaded you up in this mobile NICU...
It was so painful to see you placed inside that little box. I walked with you as they loaded you in the ambulance. They let me ride in the front seat since it was just across the street. Your daddy met me at the ambulance and we had to go around to the front entrance of the hospital. We ran. By the time we got up to the unit, you had not even made it up there yet. They began working on you right away once you arrived. You were crying so loud. Then the crying would stop and so would your breathing. Your dad and I were standing over you trying to stimulate you so that you would begin breathing again. Finally they had to put you on the ventilator. You were so tired at first that it did all the breathing for you.

After a day of tests and waiting, there were still no answers as to what exactly was causing your apnea. It was such a relief to know some of the major options were ruled out...yet scary that you were still struggling and we did not know why. Yesterday you had such a wonderful day of rest on the ventilator. You would breath over it at times and others just let it do the work for you. The doctor told us yesterday evening that today we might try you off of the ventilator. Apparently you thought that was a good idea because you pulled your tube out at about 5:30am. They immediately put a nasal cannula on you at 35% oxygen. When we first heard you breathing after you extubated yourself, there was so much fluid in your airways that you sounded like it was hard to breath. I think I held my breath for the next hour. Within a matter of hours though you were on room air through the cannula. By 8:30am you were acting a little fussy. I got to hold you in my arms for the first time in 2 days! You stopped crying immediately when you were in my arms. Throughout the day you have done so well. Your respiration's have been steady for the most part and you have maintained your oxygen saturation.
You looked so cute holding your little buddy they gave you. It was such a beautiful sight to see your head free from IVs and chords for the first time ever. Your daddy got to change your diaper this afternoon. Your nurse chuckled. Just a little bit later your tiny bottom was hanging out. At least he tried!
Your Uncle Jarrod came by and was wearing your special color. I had to get a picture of the two of you together. He looks pretty handsome in purple...but not quite as cute as you! All of your fans have stopped by and spent time with you today. They have loved on you, kissed your sweet forehead and held your hand. Have I reminded you that you are loved??
I was able to hold you again tonight. When we go home, I don't think I will ever lay you down!! Your daddy and I love you in ways that we never knew we could. You have changed our world.

*Happy 1 Week Birthday Madelyn Kate*

Love,
Mommy

Madelyn has had 4 feedings today through a tube down her throat and has done very well so far. When she stopped breathing before she had started eating just 24 hours before that. The doctor is watching closely to see if there is a correlation between the two. We are praying there is not. Only time will tell. She is breathing great!! Please keep praying!

Luke and I have been so blessed by ALL the sweet messages, emails, cards, flowers, gifts, food! We read every comment, email and facebook message!! I wanted some way to collect all these sweet messages for Madelyn. So if you read this, please leave her a message. We will print them and put them in her baby book. We know that there are so many faithful prayer warriors, those that little Madelyn's life has touched, and those that we know who have read about her journey. We are asking that anyone and everyone who is reading leave her a comment on this post for us to share with her later in life. It is such an amazing work of God to have her life touch so many...her story be told...her creator glorified through the work he has done in her!!! Let us hear from you...

  5. "Listen to me, O house of Jacob,
all you who remain of the house of Israel,
you whom I have upheld since you were conceived,
and have carried since your birth.
Even to your old age and gray hairs
I am he, I am he who will sustain you.
    I have made you and I will carry you;
I will sustain you and I will rescue you."
    Isaiah 46:3-4

    Dear Madelyn,
I always read these verses over my little boy and I have been praying them for you. I pray that you will know the One who has upheld you since you were conceived, that you will place your trust in the One who has carried you since your birth. What He has done for you so far, He will never stop doing for you. He will ever sustain and rescue you.

Kathryn, thank you for giving so many people the opportunity to share your journey and to pray with you. You are a powerful woman of God. Our MOPS group has been praying for you, Luke, and Madelyn this week and we will continue.

Your life has been a testament of the great and awesome power of your creator and in only one week! What great things he must have in store for you in the time to come. You are indeed a blessing to more people than you will ever know, and your parents are SUCH a blessing to you! Their continued faith is such an inspiration and should be a lesson to you in trials to come of how you can always take refuge in Jesus Christ. 16. Dear Madelyn,
I don't know if I'll ever get to meet you, but I feel compelled to tell you that you have had my prayers since I first heard news that your mommy was expecting you. You have a very special family and I know that they will love you with all of their hearts (And they have some big hearts) and that you will be well taken care of.
I have been following your mommy's account of your life so far and you have truly inspired me. At just one week old! I can only imagine the great things you'll do one day, with all of the love and support you have, there really are no limits for you.
You should remember that your daddy, aunt, and grandparents are all extraordinary people. And even though I've never met your mommy, she must be pretty wonderful for your daddy to have chosen her. Your family has inspired me and taken care of me in ways they probably don't even know. You are truly blessed to have them, and the world is blessed to have you too.
So, one day when you read through your baby book and see all of the wonderful people who love you, I hope you'll come to this message and know that you've touched lives you never even knew. You are a special little girl and I know God has big plans for you.
    Happy One Week Birthday,

We are all so proud of you. You continue you to be in my prayers multiple times a day... Get well soon Maddie, so mommy and daddy can take you home and spoil you rotten... 19. Happy 1 Week Birthday Sweet Baby Madelyn!!

I have been anxiously awaiting your arrival (as MANY people have!) ever since your mom started this blog and ever so diligently kept it updated with fun facts and info about your time in her lil oven!! In your Mom's best words "You are loved!"

You've had a few challanges in your first week of life but through those challenges God has been able to show his faithfulness and powerful healing abilities! Your life is already a testimony of God's wonderful love and I'm sure as you grow up you will continue that testimony in all that you do.

You keep fighting and growing and we'll keep praying for you and your family!!

  20. Dear Madelyn,

Our God is miraculous, astonishing, beyond belief, mighty, powerful, and merciful. I sit in awe of Him.

Your testimony is unbelievable and you are only one week old. I am overwhelmed by the enormity of the people praying for you, and the healing we are seeing take place. Your Mommy and Daddy's continued faith throughout this one week journey is beyond inspiring. I was talking with my sister Tuesday night as we were driving to the hospital about how small are problems really are, and how "small" we felt for complaining over what we were going through. The truth is, our Powerful God was comforting your parents, giving breath to you, giving peace to your grandparents, aunts, and uncles and He still cared about the small problems we were having. He is that BIG! He is faithful, His is true to His word, and He does answer prayer. If we learn anything from the journey you and your family have gone through it should be to seek Him, love Him, trust Him, and serve Him – no matter what the circumstances. He should be the top of our list – everything happens for a reason, and everything brings glory to our God. I praise Him for your life, your testimony, and that of your parents.

Thank you Madelyn for ministering to me and my family. Never forget God's plan for your life.

  29. Sweet Maddie Kate,
You are LOVED! We have had the awesome opportunity to know your mommy and daddy for a while now. We loved serving on staff with them at Martin's Mill Baptist Church and we were even blessed enough to stand in their wedding!
Maddie girl...you have some really special parents! Your Daddy loves Jesus with his whole heart. He loves to not only minister to others but to invest in their lives. He is kind and patient and has a great ear for good music! I am sure that he will delight in you and sing over you all the days of his life just like your Heveanly Father will be doing. Your Mommy is one of my very best friends! If you haven't figured it out yet, she is one of the most creative people I know. She is always thinking of others and always goes the EXTRA mile to make people feel loved. She loves Jesus and it is evident in the way that she uses her gifts to serve and to minister beside your Daddy. I have loved watching your Mommy and Daddy get ready for your arrival! They love you and each other SO much!
Maddie, we pray that you will continue to get better and that you will know not only the love of your sweet parents but also that of our precious Jesus.
We love you already and we can't wait until you are feeling better and we get to see you!

  31. Madelyn,
I found out about you through a friend of a friend of a cousin of your mommys. I clicked the link they posted on their facebook out of curiousity. I was up late and could not sleep. Once I laid eyes on your sweet little face, the beautiful words your mommy writes about you and the struggle you have had this past week I felt the overwhelming presence of a higher power for the first time in my life. I could not stop reading about you. I finally started over at the beginning of your mommy's blog. I read about how much they were waiting anxiously for you to arrive. The love they have for each other. The raw emotions that they felt when you entered this world and then through your fight to survive. I laughed. I cried. I reflected on my own life and the joy that I experienced when my own children entered the world. I tried to go to sleep after reading for hours your story. I could not. Something inside of me would not let me. My son woke up at about 2 am and came to get me. I thought he was going to ask for water or to sleep in my bed. Instead he said he felt like Jesus was telling him that I needed a hug. We don't attend church and never have. For my son to speak of Jesus at 2am was something that could have only meant one thing, God was trying to tell me something. I put my son back to bed. Fell to my knees and begged God to forgive me of my sins. I did not know even how to talk to him. I just know that there are so many things in my life that have to change and this morning I woke up feeling burdenless. I want my sons to know what it is like to have parents who love each other as much as yours. I know now that is only possible with God. You have led me to God. Thank you little one. May you live a long life at your parents side. Love, Marissa in New York

We have been praying for you everyday and have friends all over the world that have been praying for you. Jesus is so good! It has been so awesome to see the power of prayer at work. We know the Lord has wonderful plans for your life and know your parents can't wait to see what the Lord has in store for all of you. We pray that you continue to grow stronger each day. We also pray that as you get older and learn more about the Jesus that your parents love and trust so much, that you will come to trust Him as your Lord and Savior. HE LOVES YOU SO MUCH!

  34. Your story is all over facebook because of your wonderfull grandmother, and my friend Glenna. Glenna was the daycare director when my daughter Kellie and son Eric were there. Kellie was a chroniclly ill baby who was developmentally delayed in almost every area possible. She had been at another daycare prior to PHBC's where the workers and directors were not supportive and just basicly did not love her. Glenna and her teachers "LOVED" and taught my children. Kellie developed more in 6 weeks at PHBC than she did in 2 months at her previous day care. Madelyn is very lucky to be born into a family that is so grounded in Christian beliefs and is so filled with love and surrounded by many, many friends and family. Our prayers will be with you now and in the difficult days ahead.

  36. My Sweet Maddie,

I love you so much! I have loved you since the day your mommy and daddy told us you were growing in her tummy. I have been praying for you day by day. You are beautiful! You are loved! You are a treasure. Your life has touched the hearts and lives of so many people. God never ceases to amaze me in how He works and plans things. I am sorry I cannot be there with you right now. I am in South Africa but I did get to talk to you today on Skype. What a joy! I cannot describe the feelings that rushed through my heart. The love I have for you is overwhelming. You have been on my mind nonstop the last week as we have begged and pleaded with God to bring Healing. I have cried many tears with our Father as I sat helpless across the world. I listed to Kari Jobe over and over again just to feel close to you, praying the words of Healer over and over again. Then the news came that you had taken your own ventilator out! Girl... you are definitely a McAfee, Bitter, Bilberry baby! Way to go! We praise God for every single breath you take, for every moment mommy and daddy get to hold you, for every life that has been touched by you. My sweet niece, you are loved. I cannot wait to be home, holding you in my arms.

I love you dearly! Aunt Rachel

  37. Dearest Madelyn,

I remember the day your daddy called to tell me that your mommy was pregnant with you, I was sitting at Sonic with some friends of mine and I yelled I was so excited! Your silly daddy asked how I would rate myself as a babysitter and I am still not sure if my answer was good enough. I can't wait to spend time with you sweet niece. I have watched your mommy and daddy's relationship with your cousins and can only pray that you and I will have that same friendship. You are a very loved little girl. I loved listening to your mom tell me of how you were moving inside her and all I could do was become more and more anxious for your arrival. September 24 will be a day forever etched in my heart as a day of miracles and blessings from God. You have touched many lives already. You will continue to touch the lives of all you meet. I am so glad that God chose you for this family and that I am privileged enough to be on the sidelines watching you.

I look forward to many more birthdays, holidays, and just hang out days with you Maddie Kate!

    I love you very much!

  43. Madelyn,

Well, I saw your little picture for the first time and smiled. What a pretty baby! I have been praying for you everyday. I have thought about you everyday. I have tried to put myself in your parent's shoes, and then I yank myself right back out! Your parents are amazing, and I know they absolutely cannot wait to spend time with you at home! God is good, and I pray that you grow up and are faithful to Him. You are a blessing, and your Mom and Dad are not taking you for granted.

If you gathered all of this love, it doesn't make a drop in the bucket how much God loves you and your family and each of us. Incredible and unimaginable how much we are loved by Him! I had the awesome privilege of being your Mom's Sunday School teacher. What an incredible woman she has become. You have two Godly parents, a great gift from your Father. 46. I am so humbled by and so thankful to such a loving and gracious God. Maddie, he made you so perfectly. He designed you so thoughtfully, and he already knows the joys and struggles He's placed ahead for you. He'll walk with you through each one of them, in fact sometimes He'll just pick you up and carry you through. He is giving you the breath you need each day and through you His Spirit is already moving! Wow sweetie! Praise Him for the love and prayers He's covered you with! I love to lift you and your family up to him and trust him with your life. Your mommy and daddy are overwhelmingly in love with you, and I know that isn't ever going to change. I can't wait to get to know you more, to get to see you grow in your love for the Lord and to see the things God has packaged up inside such a little girl!

..."From whence shall my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. He will not allow your foot to slip or to be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber...The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade on your right hand...He will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore." Ps. 121

  47. Dear Maddie, We are so happy that you are here! We have been excited from the first news of your family expecting. We are thankful that you are growing stronger in every way this week. It is obvious from following your week that many in the family and the expanding family of friends are also growing stronger this week. You are bringing out the best in so many around you.

Before you were born, Uncle Mike wanted you to have a nickname you could use if you decided to play sports- so Mad Kat seemed perfect. Pulling your tubes out after regaining your strength this week makes us think the name may capture your tenacity! Look out on the soccer fields later!

Bless you, Maddie. Bless your parents, bless your whole family who have done everything they could think of to help, bless the friends who have followed your every move (seemingly all captured in pictures and words that took our breath away!). Bless all the medical professionals, and bless the volunteers who have made your life sweeter.

    We love you, Madelyn.
    Sharon and Mike
